On June 2, Microsoft held the opening presentation of Build 2026, its annual conference. One of the announcements at the event was Project Solara, a new operating system designed to work with AI agents. It’s based on Android, not Windows.
Work on the system is still in the early stages. At Build 2026, the company showcased two concept devices that could work with Project Solara: a desktop AI agent similar to the Amazon Echo Show and an AI agent in the form of a badge.

Microsoft doesn’t plan to release either device—they’re samples for partner companies. AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Healthcare, and Target are reportedly already developing pilot projects with Project Solara.
The expected launch date for Project Solara hasn’t yet been announced. It’s also unknown when the first devices running the new OS will go on sale, or at what price.
